Mediteranean Revival - San Francisco, CA

The vision for this 1924 Mediterranean Revival residence was to capture the ease of a coastal retreat within the energy and convenience of the city. Located in San Francisco’s Sea Cliff neighborhood, the property offers expansive views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands while remaining closely connected to downtown. The original front façade was preserved to complement the architectural character of the neighborhood, while the rear garden was reimagined with an enlarged terrace, splash pool, spa, and a turf-covered play area for the clients’ two young children.

 

Inside, the home’s traditional floor plan was opened by removing unnecessary partitions on the main level, creating a fluid connection between the kitchen, dining, and living spaces. A full wall of north-facing glass captures the spectacular views and fills the interiors with natural light, while simplified window and door details, wide-plank oak floors, and streamlined built-in cabinetry introduce a more contemporary sensibility. Against this relaxed neutral foundation, an eclectic mix of saturated color, graphic pattern, and sculptural lighting brings energy and personality to the rooms. The result is a home that feels refined yet playful—a sophisticated city residence with the ease and spirit of a coastal getaway.
